Mud Tunnels
Subterranean termites live in underground colonies where they have the moisture they need to survive, and they build highways known as “mud tunnels” that run throughout the soil to connect the colony to food sources. Mud tubes may be seen coming out of the ground along foundation walls, porches or patios, from under concrete slabs through cracks, visible on sill plates, floor joists, or band boards in basements or crawl spaces.
Live Termites
You may see a few different kinds of termites as you inspect a property.
Workers: The overwhelming majority of termites in a colony are workers. They are soft bodied, light colored, and about the size of grains of rice.
Soldiers: They have long heads and powerful jaws and are responsible for defending the colony against enemies such as invading ants. These are usually seen when a mud tunnel or termite feeding site is disturbed.
Swarmers: Male and female reproductive termites develop wings, leave the parent colony in a swarm, mate and start new colonies. Swarmers are usually about ¼ inch long and black in color, with wings about twice the length of their body. These termites shed their wings relatively quickly after they begin to fly, so it is common see pile of wings near windows or other light sources.
Damaged Wood
Termite-damaged wood may look crushed and may be soft when probed with a screwdriver. Termites eat softer parts of the wood first so damage usually runs parallel to the grain of the wood. Damaged wood will be lined with a mud-like material, similar to that of mud tubes.

Termite Inspection
An Amco Ranger technician inspects your property for signs of termites. Areas with current termite activity may require special above ground bait stations to be installed where termites are feeding. Above ground stations are removed after termites are eliminated.

Pre-Construction Treatment
Amco Ranger can help you make the most of your investment in a new home by using the most advanced techniques and materials available to give you unparalleled protection. As you are building your home, you now have the opportunity to protect your home from nearly everything that can damage the wood, and prevent the establishment of dry rot, insect infestation, mold, and other problems.
Conventional Soil Pre-Treatment
This treatment includes applying a liquid termiticide to the soil around and beneath the structure in order to block all possible routes of termite entry. Notification must be given prior to the pouring of flatwork (basement, garage, porches, and patios).
Borate Wood Pre-Treatment
This treatment includes application of a specially formulated borate to wood in areas critical for termite entry. Areas include sub-floor (two feet out from the perimeter), band-board perimeter (two feet up on wall studs), sill plate perimeter, floor joists (two feet from perimeter) and exterior sheeting (two feet up from perimeter). Treated areas will be protected against termites, carpenter ants, wood boring beetles, and fungi. Notification must be given as soon as the home is under roof, before plumbing and electrical work is done.
Borate Wood Pre-Treatment With Mold Control
In addition to the standard wood treatment for termite prevention, this treatment will include moldicide, termiticide, insecticide, and fungicide treatment of rooms (including underside of the floor) and other areas of the home that are prone to moisture problems including laundry rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms to kill and prevent mold growth. Also, an area of approximately two feet will be treated around all doors, windows, and any areas where plumbing or ductwork penetrates wood materials.
